The postdoctoral researcher\u00a0<\/span>Nicole Foster<\/a>, member of the Group of Aquatic Macrophyte Ecology (GAME) at the Centre for Advanced Studies of Blanes (CEAB-CSIC), has been selected for a Junior Leader Retaining Scholarship from the \u201cla Caixa\u201d Foundation<\/a>, becoming the first CEAB researcher to receive this scholarship.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

The programme Junior Leader Retention<\/strong><\/a> It is one of the most competitive postdoctoral grants in the STEM field in Spain and Portugal and awards 20 scholarships<\/strong> to support postdoctoral projects of three years duration<\/strong> in STEM disciplines in universities and research centres in Spain or Portugal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The scholarship will allow Nicole to extend her work at GAME for three more years. Her research focuses on the development of a methodology for Environmental DNA (eDNA)<\/strong> to monitor the biodiversity associated with the seagrass ecosystems<\/strong>both currently and over time. The aim of their research is to develop a set of tools based on eDNA<\/strong> that allows generating historical baselines<\/strong> to report on current efforts to restore seagrass meadows, as well as to develop methods to integrate eDNA into accounting frameworks<\/strong> with a view to its use in markets for credit of a natural nature<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In the words of the researcher herself, the Junior Leader grant from \u201cla Caixa\u201d is \u201can extraordinary opportunity to consolidate my research in Europe\u201d and offers \u201cthe platform to develop myself as an independent researcher and strengthen collaborations with leading teams in environmental and marine sciences in Spain and Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n

GAME and research on blue carbon and seagrass meadows<\/h3>\n

The group GAME<\/strong> Conduct research on coastal ecosystems dominated by aquatic macrophytes, with a background linked to the study of the seagrasses<\/strong> and their role in long-term ecological processes, including the carbon dynamics in sediments<\/strong> associated with species such as Posidonia oceanica<\/em>The group was formed at the CEAB\u2011CSIC and maintains an established line of research in the ecology and paleoecology<\/strong> of the seagrasses.<\/p>\n
