The researchers Dr.<\/strong> Nicole Foster and Dr \u00d3scar Serrano<\/strong>, members of the GAME group (Group of Aquatic Macrophyte Ecology, CEAB-CSIC), were selected as finalists for the 2026 edition of the Scientists for Nature Challenge: A Quantum Leap for Biodiversity<\/strong>, held within the framework of 75th anniversary of the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

The contest, organised by the initiative Families for Nature<\/em><\/a>, it brought together proposals from researchers from more than 25 countries with the aim of identifying innovative solutions for the conservation and restoration of nature. Among the six shortlisted proposals was Escalando la Restauraci\u00f3n del Carbono Azul<\/strong>, presented by Dr. Nicole Foster<\/a> and Dr. \u00d3scar Serrano<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The proposal addresses one of the main challenges of coastal ecosystem restoration: long-term financing. Through innovative business models that integrate different sources of income associated with restoration, the project aims to transform the conservation and restoration of seagrass meadows into economically sustainable activities, capable of generating benefits both for coastal communities and the environment. The proposal received special support from Jonathan Bloch, who contributed to designing the business model.<\/p>\n

Seagrass meadows are essential ecosystems for climate change mitigation, as they store large amounts of blue carbon, protect coasts from erosion, and support important fishery resources. However, their degradation continues to advance in many regions of the world due to human pressures and climate change.<\/p>\n

The participation of Nicole Foster and \u00d3scar Serrano in this international meeting allowed them to present these ideas to an audience made up of Nobel laureates, scientists, philanthropists, entrepreneurs, and investors committed to seeking innovative solutions for global environmental challenges.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, The proposal presented by Dr Nicole Foster and Dr \u00d3scar Serrano was recognised as one of the outstanding runners-up of the competition.<\/strong>, an acknowledgment that highlights the potential of blue carbon restoration as a tool to simultaneously address the climate crisis and biodiversity loss.<\/p>\n

This international recognition reinforces the importance of the work carried out by GAME in the field of coastal ecosystem restoration and blue carbon, as well as the growing interest in developing mechanisms to scale these solutions and increase their long-term impact.<\/p>\n
