{"id":10720,"date":"2026-08-28T10:50:58","date_gmt":"2026-08-28T08:50:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/game-csic.com\/?p=10720"},"modified":"2026-08-28T11:17:51","modified_gmt":"2026-08-28T09:17:51","slug":"la-biodiversidad-asociada-a-las-praderas-marinas-de-shark-bay-bajo-la-lupa-de-nuevas-tecnologias-de-adn-ambiental","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/game-csic.com\/en\/la-biodiversidad-asociada-a-las-praderas-marinas-de-shark-bay-bajo-la-lupa-de-nuevas-tecnologias-de-adn-ambiental\/","title":{"rendered":"The biodiversity associated with the seagrass meadows of Shark Bay, under the scrutiny of new environmental DNA technologies"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<h3>The GAME group is participating in an international campaign to assess the biodiversity and natural capital of the seagrass meadows in Shark Bay, Western Australia.<\/h3>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<div>\n<p>BIOSFERA Research &amp; Conservation SL (hereinafter, BIO) received a two-year project from <a href=\"https:\/\/australia.conservation.org\/\"><strong>Conservation International Australia<\/strong><\/a> to create a \"Toolkit for the Assessment of Seagrass Meadow Natural Capital\" in order to capitalise on market opportunities related to natural capital and biodiversity for the restoration of seagrass meadow ecosystems through cutting-edge environmental DNA (eDNA) technologies and strong partnerships. To achieve this goal, in mid-September, Karina Inostroza (BIO) led the second expedition to Shark Bay (Western Australia) to assess biodiversity in resilient, restored, and lost meadows of <em>Posidonia australis<\/em> and\/or <em>Amphibolis antarctica<\/em> South of Denham. The assessments included water and sediment sampling for eDNA collection, visual studies of fish and macroinvertebrates, photographic studies of the benthos, and in situ evaluations of the composition and structure of seagrass species using Seagrass-Watch methodologies.<\/p>\n<p>Biodiversity assessments, using traditional in situ visual observation methods and more recent environmental DNA (eDNA) approaches, have also been carried out at the sites of a restoration project funded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhp.com\/\"><strong>BHP<\/strong><\/a> and led by the company <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tidalmoon.com.au\/\">Clima de Luna de Marea<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nature.com.au\/\">Nature Pty Ltd<\/a>.<\/strong>, owned and managed by indigenous people. The team for this expedition was made up of <strong>Karina Inostroza<\/strong> (BIO), <strong>Alex Dood<\/strong> and <strong>Sean McNeair<\/strong> (Tidal Moon), <strong>Marlene Wesselmann<\/strong> (Edith Cowan University) and <strong>Miguel A. Mateo<\/strong> (Group of Aquatic Macrophyte Ecology, GAME\/CEAB-CSIC and ECU).
