It is perennial, with a woody rhizome that ends in a cluster of green, strap-shaped leaves with smooth edges and parallel veins. These can exceed one metre in length. Author: Elena D\u00edaz Almela.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>Posidonia<\/em> It has clonal growth, where the repeating unit is the clump or shoot, consisting of a clump of leaves, a rhizome, and at least one root.<\/p>\n<p>There are horizontal growth shoots, also called apices, which colonise the substrate, dividing several times a year, and growing annually between 1 and 10 cm. Their internodes can measure more than 1 centimetre.<\/p>\n<p>But most shoots grow vertically. Seeking the light, they avoid being buried. Vertical shoots, with internodes of 1 or 2 millimetres (Fig. 2), usually do not grow more than 1 cm per year, except when reacting to intense burial, in which case they can grow up to 4 cm per year.<\/p>\n<p>The plant compensates for its very slow growth with incredibly long-lived shoots, which can exceed 60 years. This, combined with the size of some clones, suggests that each plant as a whole can live for centuries or millennia, and some estimate between tens and hundreds of thousands of years, making it the longest-lived known species on the planet.<\/p>\n<p>The accumulation of sediments and the slow vertical growth of the plant cause the meadow of <em>Posidonia<\/em> It rises over millennia, forming a kind of reef called a \"mata\" (Fig. 4), with very interesting environmental properties, as we shall see.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7852\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7852\" style=\"width: 611px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7852 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/game-csic.comwp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/4.-Formaci\u00f3n-de-la-mata-de-Posidonia-orig.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"611\" height=\"359\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7852\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fig. 4. Author: Elena D\u00edaz Almela.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Although <em>Posidonia oceanica<\/em> It reproduces mainly vegetatively, but it is also capable of sexual reproduction. Some years, in autumn, the meadows bloom. The shoots produce green inflorescences, composed of spikelets with hermaphrodite flowers (with ovary and stamens) and male flowers (stamens only, Fig. 5).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7854\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7854\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7854\" src=\"https:\/\/game-csic.comwp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/6.-inflorescencia-300x269.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"269\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7854\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fig. 6.
