Last week (28-30 October 2019) we celebrated the first edition of the international course \u201cSizing the Blue Carbon\u201d at our headquarters, the Centre for Advanced Studies of Blanes, Spain (Spanish National Research Council).<\/p>\n
We were blessed with the attendance of 18 participants from all over the world: Canada, Croatia, France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Kenya, Japan, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Tanzania, and Tunisia.<\/p>\n
Invited speakers from France, Germany, Spain, and Sweden provided brilliant contributions on cutting-edge topics in Blue Carbon research and markets.<\/p>\n
From the very first day, participants, speakers and organisers created a friendly and motivating atmosphere that helped to make the most of the time and benefit from this unique gathering of experts and highly qualified attendees.<\/p>\n
An initial up-to-date overview of the world of Blue Carbon was provided, with emphasis on the dynamics of BC sinks, the role and importance of BC stocks and fluxes in a global context, and its potential in voluntary carbon markets.<\/p>\n
The participants had the opportunity to take part in a coring demonstration in the field, as well as in the opening and subsampling techniques of a core. They were instructed in the main laboratory techniques (drying, grinding, digesting, encapsulating, etc.), safe sample storage (humid and wet lithotecs) and labelling, and comprehensive numerical techniques to estimate the stocks and fluxes of Blue Carbon. Finally, the participants carried out a brief but instructive practicum on how to design a Blue Carbon sampling mission based on a given ecosystem extent and resource availability, working in groups.
