About me

My name is Irene. I studied Biology at Girona University. To specialise in Marine Biology, I completed two internships. The first was at Laguna University (Canary Islands) and the second at Universidade dos Açores (Azores Islands). I finished my studies and worked for some time in the Azores as a Marine Biologist, conducting photoID on a whale-watching boat. Before studying biology, I graduated in Communication; one of my interests is to create a link between science and the public sphere through communication strategies. Therefore, to combine my two academic backgrounds, I took a course at the Autonomous University of Madrid (Spain) specifically focused on communication in natural reserves. When I decided to pursue my master’s, I moved to Copenhagen to attend the Technical University (DTU). My technical skills were honed, and I graduated with an Eng. Master in Aquatic Technology and Science in 2019.

Hobbies

I am a marine biologist, so you will more easily find me diving than hiking. I have always lived by the sea. In fact, for the last six years my home has been on different islands. From the warmth of Macaronesia to Scandinavia, stopping in Iceland. Somehow my career led me to northern lands. It was only last year that I saw coral reefs. I stayed in East Asia for six months with the aim of exploring coral reefs. I ended up on a remote island around Raja Ampat. The beauty of my daily life snorkelling through mangroves and along the coral reefs was soul-nourishing. Isolation was overcome by engaging with the local community and because of years of training too.
I am also a creative person; I do theatre and mime as a hobby. When performing, I connect with the audience. It is fantastic what can happen when there are no words and only the present moment.
I am also a regular yoga instructor. I started it 5 years ago and I haven’t stopped yet.

Scientific interests

Marine ecosystem builders are the basis of my research. By studying their resilience and potential adaptation to disturbances such as fishing, bio-invasions, or climate change, the efficiency of long-term management decisions aimed at preserving their ecological services and the benefits we derive from them can be improved.
