Dr Òscar Serrano studies the importance of wrack on our beaches
The Dr Òscar Serrano, researcher at CEAB-CSIC and leader of the GAME, has published a new article for the magazine Very Interesting, in which he reflects on the beauty and ecological value of wrack, the remains of seaweed and marine plants that wash up on the beaches
In his article, titled The hidden beauty of seaweed wrack on the beachesDr Serrano points out that these plant remains are much more than simple "marine debris". The wrack plays essential roles in coastal ecosystems: they protect the shoreline, serve as shelter and food for numerous species, and contribute to the natural dynamics of the beaches.
Despite their ecological importance, wrack is frequently removed during cleaning tasks, motivated by aesthetic or tourist reasons. In his text, Òscar Serrano calls for a change in this perception and for recognising its key role in the health of our coastal ecosystems.
