The Ocean Decade (UNESCO) promotes Blue Carbon research to mitigate climate change

The Global Decade of Ocean Science Programme for Blue Carbon (GO-BC), led by the University of St Andrews (United Kingdom), aims to improve the understanding of the link between the ocean and the climate, promoting the conservation and recovery of the Blue Carbon Ecosystems (ECB). This initiative is part of the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030), driven by the UNESCO, which aims to mobilise the marine sciences in the service of global sustainability.

The GO-BC brings together an international network of researchers, managers, governments and local communities to advance research, restoration and management of Blue Carbon, as well as to promote the training of young scientists and the knowledge transfer to public policy and conservation.

With this joint effort, the Ocean Decade strengthens the role of the Blue Carbon as a significant aid in the fight against climate change, emphasising that protecting and restoring coastal ecosystems also means protect the future of the planet.
