SUMILEN ends, Blue Carbon continues
The project SUMILEN funded by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, carried out by the marine microphyte ecology group (GAME), was completed in December 2017.
Among its objectives were:
- Assessing the potential of seagrass meadows as carbon sinks
- Testing new sampling techniques in collaboration with SMEs
- Characterise the geochemical processes that allow the formation of mats beneath the seagrass meadows.
After 4 years of research and two oceanographic campaigns, it has served as the basis for the European project. Life Blue Natura Intended to transfer this knowledge to the political sphere where measures can be taken for the conservation of these habitats.
