Success sampling in Andalusia
The GAME team returned a few weeks ago from the second major campaign on the Andalusian coast as part of the project. Life Blue NaturaThis aimed to sample the spatial and environmental variability of the stock and carbon flows that make up the seagrass meadows of Andalusia. Sampling was carried out in the provinces of Almería, Granada, and Málaga in meadows of Posidonia oceanica and of Cymodocea nodosa.
They were 11 days of intense work and of coexistence in the Oceanographic Vessel García del CidManual sampling was carried out in shallow, intermediate, and deep areas, as well as mechanised sampling using the Vibro Core in deep areas.
In this campaign, sampling has been carried out in 17 points, have been taken out 13 vibrocores and 34 manual cores approximately 2 metres in length!
The maximum length of the extracted sediment cores has been 5.40 metres. These witnesses (cores) probably collect several thousand years of carbon sink historyIn some places, we have been able to reach sediments from before the seagrass habitat was established, so we are confident that these cores represent a complete sample of the entire carbon stock accumulated by the seagrass meadow.
In addition to the cores, biomass samples, vertical bundles for lepidocronological analysis, and samples of primary producers for isotopic signal analysis have also been taken.
The next step is to carry out subsampling in the laboratory (we estimate a total of 960 subsamples which come from the cores) and elemental analyses in order to quantify the amount of Carbon that Andalusian meadows can accumulate, thus contributing to the mitigation of the effects of climate change.
