Description

The project aims to obtain long time series of data from sedimentary records formed by marine phanerogams to address key issues related to the environment and its management.

Trillions of euros are globally invested to assess ecosystem services and their responses to natural and anthropogenic pressures. However, contemporary monitoring records are short and usually inadequate because changes in ecosystems occur across various temporal and spatial scales.

The Project aims to use the record of marine phanerogams to reconstruct the millennial history of coastal ecosystems, in order to identify reference conditions, trajectories of change in ecological conditions, cycles and thresholds of change in ecosystem dynamics influenced by natural and anthropogenic forces, as well as to determine the role of marine phanerogams as biogeochemical sinks in the Mediterranean region.
