The computed tomography (CT) scanner to quantify the carbon sink associated with seagrass meadows.

Clara Roig presented her master's thesis to the UB panel a few days ago after months of working with the GAME team at CEAB-CSIC.

His work proposes the use of computed tomography (CT) to non-destructively quantify the proportion of organic and inorganic fractions in a sediment core from a meadow. Posidonia oceanica from the Cabrera Archipelago National Park, in the Balearic Islands, extracted by GAME.

The images from the survey have been analysed and compared with the results of the standard analytical methods (Loss on ignition for the analysis of organic matter and Bernard Calcimetries for the analysis of inorganic carbon) with the aim of finding correlations.

The results show a high correlation, suggesting the real possibility of using methodologies such as computed tomography (CT) to quantify the size of the organic and inorganic carbon sink associated with marine seagrass bed sediments.
