About me
Miguel Ángel was born in León and developed a strong bond with the sea during his youth in Santander. He moved to Barcelona where he studied Biology and obtained his doctorate at the University of Barcelona (UB). After spending nearly three years in the Netherlands (Centrum voor Estuariene en Mariene Ecologie, KNAW) as a recipient of an EU-Marie Curie fellowship, he worked as a lecturer in Ecology, Marine Biology, and Biogeochemical Cycles at the UB until 2004. That same year, he joined the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), securing a permanent position at the Blanes Centre for Advanced Studies (CEAB).
Miguel Ángel is one of the pioneers of Blue Carbon science. In the 1990s, he developed methods to sample, date, and model carbon buried in seagrass and saltmarsh sediments, laying the foundations of what is now known as Blue Carbon research. His leadership in the LIFE Blue Natura project led to the first regional Blue Carbon inventory in Spain and contributed to the first European carbon certification standard for coastal ecosystems. With over 150 scientific publications and decades of international collaboration, his research continues to define the biogeochemical role of coastal vegetation in climate change mitigation.
